Pittsburgh Mayor Out of Hospital

PITTSBURGH — Mayor Richard S. Caliguiri, who suffers from a rare and incurable disease, checked out of the hospital today following a pacemaker implant and said he plans to be on the job when the new City Council is sworn in next week.
“I’m feeling fine. Everything is clicking away very well,” Caliguiri said at Shadyside Hospital. “I feel fit and I am ready to get going again.” Doctors implanted the battery-powered pacemaker into Caliguiri’s chest Christmas Eve to correct an irregular heartbeat caused by amyloidosis, an often fatal disease diagnosed in March. Doctors said the disease had left deposits of protein in his heart that were interfering with his heartbeat and blood flow.
