Georgia’s Dooley Gets Chance for Revenge Against Arkansas

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Georgia Coach Vince Dooley hopes to break the ice against Arkansas in tonight’s Liberty Bowl.

His 15th-ranked Bulldogs (8-3) have met the Razorbacks (9-3) in bowl games twice and have come away losers both times.

Dooley gets his chance for revenge (5 p.m., Channel 11) in the newly expanded 63,104-seat Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium.

“My memories of Arkansas are not good at all,” said Dooley, whose teams lost to the Razorbacks, 16-2 in the 1969 Sugar Bowl and 31-10 in the 1976 Cotton Bowl.

If the Bulldogs are to win, they must find a way to solve Arkansas Coach Ken Hatfield’s wishbone offense, which totaled 3,196 yards rushing during the regular season.

The prime target for the Bulldog defense is Arkansas halfback James Rouse, who is only the third Razorback to rush for more than 1,000 yards during a season.

Rouse gained 1,004 yards in 182 carries for a 10.1-yard average and scored 17 touchdowns.

Georgia suspended its punter, placekicker and three reserves, but Dooley would not say why.

Punter Joey Huster and kicker Steve Crumley will not play.

Dooley also confirmed that defensive lineman Wycliffe Lovelace was one of the players suspended. Lovelace has not played this season. Dooley would not identify the other two players.
