THE HAGUE — Three thousand anti-nuclear demonstrators marched to a U.S. Army base in the Netherlands on Saturday and placed flowers on the perimeter fence in a Christmas appeal for peace, organizers said.
It was the 12th year in succession that Dutch peace groups had held a march to the Halverteberg base in the north of the country at Christmas to press for an end to nuclear weapons.
Several speakers who addressed the crowd praised the U.S.-Soviet agreement to scrap medium- and shorter-range nuclear missiles but said more measures are needed to ensure peace.
