Sri Lankan police blamed Sinhalese extremists belonging to the People’s Liberation Front for the assassination of the chairman of the ruling United National Party and three of his aides. The slayings came four days after President Junius R. Jayewardene vowed to eliminate the front, which is composed of majority Sinhalese opposed to a peace accord aimed at ending the minority Tamils’ four-year fight for autonomy. The front has vowed to kill anyone supporting the pact. Party chief Harsha Abeywardene, 43, was in his car when the killers opened fire.
