Local News in Brief : Costa Mesa : Motorist Killed After Hitting Freeway Divider

An El Toro woman was killed late Tuesday when the car she was driving struck a concrete divider on the southbound San Diego Freeway at Bristol Street in Costa Mesa, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The victim, identified by the CHP as Janet M. West, 44, had been shopping at South Coast Plaza. She entered the southbound San Diego Freeway at the Bristol Street on-ramp at 8:15 p.m., then suddenly swerved to the left and crashed into the center divider, a CHP spokeswoman said.
West suffered severe head injuries and died at Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, the spokeswoman said.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
