In his zeal to defend racist R.J. Stoner’s right to say what he pleases at the Holiday Inn, Fred Okrand of the American Civil Liberties Union (Letters, Dec. 13) neglects the despicable content of said speech. Where, Mr. Okrand, are your regrets for the Neanderthal concepts espoused by Stoner?
Racism is a particularly evil aspect of man’s nature. Humanity needs to evolve beyond the erroneous belief that any race or people is superior to any other. It is disheartening to realize that this is not a new idea. Our own Declaration of Independence tells us that “all men are created equal.” The First Amendment may protect Stoner’s right to trash this noble truth, but it does not legitimize his fomentations. I fear that the ACLU’s blind defense of form over content does just that.
