Queen Elizabeth II will break with tradition and denounce the Irish Republican Army’s campaign of violence in Northern Ireland in her annual Christmas Day message, British newspapers said. The queen has never spoken out against the IRA’s 18-year guerrilla war, and the monarch customarily avoids taking sides on political issues. London’s Daily Mirror said the queen will plea for an end to worldwide terrorism in the 10-minute message, to be televised and broadcast on radio Dec. 25 to about 100 million people in the 48-member Commonwealth. Buckingham Palace would neither confirm nor deny reports on the contents of the queen’s message.
