New Westside Children’s Museum Debuts Phase 1

Families will get a preview of things to come at the Westside Children’s Museum today as the museum opens for the first time. The fledgling museum is a slow-growing proposition, according to founder Gloria Garven, and the yearlong Phase 1 will focus on workshops and special events. Phase 2, scheduled to begin in early 1989, will mark the beginning of permanent exhibits, in the Los Angeles Children’s Museum and Kidspace tradition.
Today’s festivities, from noon to 5 p.m., will offer visitors a peek at the museum’s facility in one wing of the recently closed Madison School in Santa Monica. The interactive theater group, We Tell Stories, will perform its version of “The Nutcracker” in the school/museum auditorium. Children will be invited up on stage to get a new perspective on the classic.
From 2:30 to 5 p.m., there’s a toy-making workshop under the watchful eyes of Mattel toy makers. Kids will be able to bring home their creations. Also on the agenda is a hands-off exhibit of three kinds of classic toys: erector sets, Tinker toys and Lincoln logs.
The museum will open again in February with a monthlong series of workshops and performances with a music theme.
