High School Basketball : Nielsen Makes Key Free Throws to Lift Burbank Past Notre Dame

Mark Nielsen made 8 of 8 free throws in the fourth quarter and scored a game-high 21 points to lead Burbank to a 58-53 nonleague win over Notre Dame at Burbank. Burbank was 25 of 31 from the free-throw line.
Nielsen scored 15 points in the second half. Mike Nash added 12 points for Burbank (6-2).
Bruce Heicke scored 20 points for Notre Dame (2-5) and Ed Cogan scored 11.
BOYS BASKETBALL
South Hills 60, Canyon 38--South Hills finished fifth in the Alhambra tournament and handed Canyon (1-6) its fifth loss in a row. Mike Garner led Canyon with 10 points. The Cowboys’ other starters each scored two points. South Hills outscored Canyon, 15-0, in the final 2:45.
Kennedy 61, Hamilton 47--Clarence Williams scored 14 points and Uba Satterfield and Cord Bailey each added 11 as the Cougars overcame a sluggish first quarter to move into the final of the Hamilton tournament.
Trailing, 18-7, after the first quarter, Kennedy regrouped in the second quarter, outscoring the Yankees, 26-7, to take a 33-25 halftime lead.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Burroughs 58, Louisville 43--Kelly McCauley scored 14 points and Maya Vigil added 13 for Burroughs in the semifinal round of the Burroughs tournament. Louisville (3-4) was led by Kristen Carpenter with 16 points. Becky Long scored 13 points.
