Joe Paul scored 27 points and Nate Hantgin added 18 as Ventura High beat Agoura, 82-71, in the final of the Thousand Oaks tournament.
Agoura held a four-point lead with 3:39 remaining in the third quarter when Ventura (7-0) switched to a 3-2 zone defense that left Agoura thoroughly befuddled.
“We made a few mistakes at the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth quarter and that’s what did it,” Agoura Coach Kevin Pasky said.
Agoura (4-6) was led by Dave Corridori’s 27 points.
Ventura players Paul, Hantgin and brother Chris Hantgin, were named to the all-tournament team. Paul was the tournament’s most valuable player. Corridori and teammate Shambi Huddleston also were selected to the team.
Westlake 66, Calabasas 51--Kevin Logan scored 13 points and Bill Fassl added 12 as the Warriors won the consolation bracket.
Calabasas trailed throughout the game despite Jon Drezner’s game-high 16 points.
Ross Sheppard 63, Newbury Park 61--Lema Vas’ five-foot jump shot with 11 seconds left clinched third place.
