MANILA — Col. Gregorio (Gringo) Honasan, a leader of the bloody Aug. 28 coup attempt, has been formally discharged from the military, President Corazon Aquino announced Friday.
Aquino told reporters she had approved a Defense Department recommendation that Honasan’s service with the military be terminated. The decision, which turns Honasan into a civilian, also strips him of all military benefits, including monetary benefits and housing privileges. Honasan’s family must leave its home inside the armed forces headquarters in suburban Camp Aguinaldo.
Honasan is undergoing investigation in the August revolt that left 53 people dead and 300 wounded.
