HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL : Poor Shooting Hampers Saugus in 72-57 Loss

Saugus made only 13 of 43 field-goal attempts and 26 of 42 free throws as Beverly Hills defeated the Centurions, 72-57, in a nonleague game Thursday at Saugus.
Saugus, the defending Southern Section 3-A champion, fell to 1-6.
“Beverly Hills beat us on the boards and they beat us with athletic ability,” Saugus Coach John Clark said. “We didn’t shoot poor shots. We got beat and we took two shots we maybe shouldn’t have taken.”
Sean Legaux and Stacey Anschultz led Saugus with 12 points each. Chris Plummer scored 32 points and Derek Patton added 20 to lead Beverly Hills.
Sylmar 80, Hollywood 77 (3 OTs)--David Baker scored 27 points and pulled down 14 rebounds to lead Sylmar in the nonleague game at Hollywood.
Shawn Rucker scored 18 points and had seven assists. The Spartans (3-0) outscored Hollywood, 11-8, in the third overtime period.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Louisville 50, Van Nuys 38--Kristin Carpenter scored 15 points and had 11 rebounds, and Becky Long scored 14 points to lead Louisville (3-3) in the first round of the Burroughs tournament. Long made 10 of 13 free throws.
Bell-Jeff 60, Leuzinger 49--Sarah Bancs had 17 points, 13 rebounds and 7 assists to lead Bell-Jeff in the first round of the Burroughs tournament. Andja Vucurevic added 24 points for Bell-Jeff (3-4).
