Vollnogle Will Equal Record If Carson Wins City 4-A Title

Gene Vollnogle, Carson High School’s football coach, could tie the late Jim Blewett, who coached at Manual Arts, for most City championship game victories when the Colts play Granada Hills tonight for the 4-A title at 7:30 at East Los Angeles College.
Carson, the defending champion, is 11-0 and Granada Hills is 8-3. The teams met earlier this season, Carson winning, 42-14.
Vollnogle, whose Colts have been the top-ranked team in the City since the start of the season, won the first of his eight championships in 1958 at Banning and added another with the Pilots in 1960 before taking over at Carson.
His Colt teams have won six City crowns, including last season’s, provided by a 21-11 victory over previously undefeated Banning.
Vollnogle’s overall record is 276-71-1.
Blewett won his nine titles at Manual Arts in 1930-62.
