Local News in Brief : Hotel Site to Lose Zoning

The Hermosa Beach City Council plans to repeal a zoning plan that would have allowed a 250-room beachfront hotel.
In 1984, the council rezoned the former site of the Biltmore Hotel and some surrounding parcels to allow construction of a new hotel. A referendum in 1985 challenged the plan, however, and last month the 2nd District Court of Appeal ruled that voters had defeated the proposal.
Proponents of the hotel are hoping that the California Supreme Court will hear the case and reverse the outcome. But in the meantime, the City Council unanimously directed the city’s Planning Commission to work on restoring the former commercial or residential zonings in the neighborhood.
The Biltmore site, the only vacant beachfront property in the city, would again be C-2, which allows restricted commercial businesses, including restaurants, alcoholic beverage establishments, offices, retail uses and banks.
