In his regular weekly statewide radio speech, Gov. George Deukmejian again said he is seeking a 40% increase in money for new highway construction to bring total funding up to $7.5 billion for more than 1,500 projects over the next five years. The total includes $2.3 billion in bond issues first announced by the governor last May that are still pending in the Legislature. Deukmejian also called for increased use of new technologies, such as road sensors and closed-circuit monitors, to help improve the traffic flow, ride sharing, and commuter lanes. And he noted that earlier this year he signed into law other legislation to allow counties to raise the sales tax for transportation purposes with voter approval.
