DUBLIN — Women now outnumber men for the first time in the Irish Republic, according to census figures published on Friday in this country of 3.5 million people.
The highest ratio was in Dublin, where there are 1,113 females to every 1,000 males.
The population swing has been due largely to mass emigration by up to 30,000 men a year who leave in desperation to go job-hunting in North America, Britain and Australia.
