Paul McGowan of Florida State University was named winner of the 1987 Butkus Award as the nation’s best college linebacker. McGowan, a 6-foot 1-inch, 230-pound senior, received 25 points from an 11-member judging panel to edge Ohio State’s Chris Spielman by one point for the third annual award from the Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando, Fla.
