Local News in Brief : Bradley Scored on Sewers

Mayor James Conn of Santa Monica denounced as “hypocrisy” Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley’s plan to ask other cities, including Santa Monica, to restrict growth and share the blame for sewer troubles in Los Angeles.
Conn said Los Angeles has ignored many requests that it repair its sewer system and upgrade the Hyperion treatment plant, which receives sewage from Santa Monica and other cities.
“For five years, we’ve been telling L.A. to fix Hyperion and that we are willing to pay our share. . . ,” he said. “And for five years, we’ve been trying to control development in Santa Monica while L.A. was (going) pell-mell on growth and development. So now, because it is politically expedient, they are going to try to punish us?”
Bradley on Tuesday ordered emergency water conservation steps in Los Angeles and proposed a limit on construction to prevent sewage overflows. He called on cities that use the Los Angeles sewers to also limit growth.
