A UC San Diego chemistry student was injured Thursday when a glass vial containing a chemical solution exploded in his hand, a university spokeswoman said.
Song Liu, 26, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla where he was listed in satisfactory condition, hospital spokeswoman Diane Yohe said. Surgeons who removed glass from Liou’s hand were confident he would not lose its use, she said.
Liu, from China, was performing an experiment with a hydrogen peroxide solution, the spokeswoman said. Another student in the laboratory was not injured in the blast, which caused minor damage.
Officials of the university’s Environmental Health and Safety office are investigating the cause of the explosion.
