Owner Edward DeBartolo Jr. of the San Francisco 49ers has told the team that he will match their playoff bonuses--raising each player’s share to at least $12,000--in the first game after the regular season.
“The reason behind this was the strike,” 49er spokesman Jerry Walker said. “Some of the players lost money . . . and Mr. D. wanted to make the most positive atmosphere.”
DeBartolo promised the bonus in letters sent to every player Oct. 22, three days before the team’s first game after the strike.
He said he would match each player’s $6,000 playoff share for a wild-card game or the $10,000 player share if the team won the divisional title.
