Navy Will Test Trident Missile

WASHINGTON — The Navy will resume testing of its new Trident 2 ballistic missile today while President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev are completing their three-day summit meeting, defense officials said Wednesday.

The officials, who demanded anonymity, said the scheduled test launch at Cape Canaveral, Fla., should not pose any complications to arms control discussions because the missile will not carry the maximum number of dummy warheads.

The sources insisted there is no link between today’s scheduled test and the summit and that no effort is being made to “send a signal to the Russians.”

“This has been planned for some time,” said one source. “We started testing in January; we’ve done seven tests so far, and this is simply the eighth. We go when the technicians say we’re ready.”
