Wilson Undecided on His Vote on Treaty

WASHINGTON — Sen. Pete Wilson (R-Calif.) said Wednesday that while he views the new U.S.-Soviet nuclear missile treaty as a major breakthrough in arms control, he has not yet decided whether he will vote for the pact.

The Times reported erroneously Wednesday that Wilson planned to vote for the treaty eliminating ground-launched intermediate-range nuclear weapons.

“The INF treaty means more than the elimination of a class of nuclear missiles,” Wilson said. “It constitutes a major and dramatic change in nuclear arms control policy. It breaks new ground in verification measures. It requires an asymmetrical reduction in nuclear forces. And it underscores the simple fact that we must be credible and steady in dealing with the Soviets.”
