San Diego High School Basketball : Mission Bay Holds Off Ramona in Tournament
- Share via
Seniors Mike Endsley and Keith Berkley both made free throws with less than a minute to play to give Mission Bay High School a 46-45 victory over Ramona in the Torrey Pines round-robin basketball tournament Tuesday night.
Even though Endsley made two with 45 seconds to play and Berkley made two with nine seconds left, Ramona had a chance to win. Ramona almost scored an uncontested layup with just a few seconds left.
Because of a new rule, the referee can put the ball in play if a team does not come out of its huddle promptly after a timeout. After a timeout following Berkley’s free throws, Ramona threw the ball the length of the court as Mission Bay came out of the huddle slowly. Ramona had a player standing alone under the basket but could not convert because the inbounds pass sailed out of bounds.
Tony Newman led Mission Bay (3-1) with 15 points. Ramona dropped to 2-2.
In another Torrey Pines tournament game:
Fallbrook 63, Carlsbad 41--Todd Adamson and Mike West each scored 18 points to lead Fallbrook. The score was tied, 12-12, after the first period, but Fallbrook (3-1) outscored Carlsbad, 19-6, in the second period. Ron Helms had 14 points to lead Carlsbad (0-1).
GROSSMONT
Valhalla 71, Mount Miguel 61--Sophomore Tony Clark had 20 points and 14 rebounds to led Valhalla in its season opener. Teammate Rafid Kiti had 18 points. Mount Miguel led by three at halftime (29-26) and maintained that edge through part of the third quarter (52-49). But Valhalla pulled away gradually and led by 10 most of the fourth quarter. Jerome Tonsing had 16 and Robert Griffith had 14 for Mount Miguel (2-2).
Helix 51, Monte Vista 44--Monte Vista trailed, 47-44, with 17 seconds to play when Jeff Polinski’s three-pointer fell short. Helix scored on a layup a few seconds later and made the free throws after a Monte Vista foul. Helix had trailed, 10-2, early in the game, gradually cut that deficit to one point with 1:50 to play and then scored on two consecutive possessions.
NONLEAGUE
Oceanside 48, San Dieguito 44--Oceanside (2-1) led, 21-18, at halftime in its opener but outscored San Dieguito, 19-11, in the third quarter to win the nonleague game at home.
