Pope John Paul II and Patriarch Dimitrios I, leader of the world’s 250 million Eastern Orthodox Christians, met in the Vatican and issued a statement condemning drug addiction and “the search for pleasure which goes beyond all moral order.” Dimitrios, the second Orthodox leader to visit Rome since the churches split in 1054, was ending a five-day stay. The two spiritual leaders also pledged to “work together for justice and peace, throughout the world and on a regional and local level,” and to attack racism as “denying the fundamental equality of all before God.”
