Two Contra Hearing Disrupters to Pay Fine or Serve 10 Days

WASHINGTON — A judge on Monday ordered two men who disrupted Lt. Col. Oliver L. North’s testimony during the televised Iran-Contra hearings last summer to pay a $200 fine or spend 10 days in jail.
Michael Bardoff and Michael Kreis, both of Baltimore and members of a group called Emergency Response Network, were convicted last month of disrupting Congress and illegally demonstrating.
They were dragged from the hearing room in July after they stood up during North’s testimony and unfurled a banner that read: “Ask about the cocaine.”
The message was a reference to allegations that drug money has helped to finance the war of U.S.-backed Contras against the Nicaraguan government.
Bardoff and Kreis told Judge John Suda in District of Columbia Superior Court on Monday that they would refuse to pay a fine or perform community service. Suda gave them 60 days to reconsider.
