Martin Marietta won a $1.6-billion contract to build 13 additional Titan IV heavy-lift rocket boosters. The award brings to 23 the number of Titan IVs ordered so far by the Air Force. The rocket will be used to supplement the Air Force’s use of the space shuttle for boosting heavy satellites into Earth orbit. In addition, the Martin contract includes funds to “activate” a Titan IV launch site at Vandenberg Air Force Base north of Los Angeles.
