MEXICO CITY — The area of land under cultivation in Mexico increased from 43.7 million to 49.4 million acres between 1982 and 1986, the Agriculture Department said.
Overall production rose from 114.4 million to 122.7 million metric tons, the department said. It said production of basic grains rose 13.1% during the five-year period--from 16 million to more than 18 million tons--allowing the country to decrease corn imports and produce all its own rice, beans and wheat.
