Maestro Mehta

In John Henken’s article on Maestro Mehta, our former music director stated that he never said he lived for art and was thus not Tosca (“Zubin Mehta--Making Time for Making Music,” Nov. 29).

While this indeed may be true, Mr. Mehta does share something in common with Puccini’s Tosca; both are prima donnas. His entire career has represented a triumph of ego and style over substance.

Mehta is also puzzled by the fact that his recordings sell so poorly. Clearly, the man in unaware that a great many of us feel he has simply nothing to say as a musician worth or preservation.
