United Artists Communications’ net fell 40% to $4.85 million for the year ended Aug. 31, compared to the 1986 fiscal year. Revenue grew to $657.4 million, up 23% from a year ago. The Englewood, Colo., company attributed the revenue gains to its cable systems unit, which picked up additional subscribers and saw a 6% increase in average revenue per subscriber, and a 36% increase in theater revenue. Lower earnings were said to be a result of a one-time provision of $11.2 million for contract obligations, acquisition-related increases in interest expense and higher income taxes.
