CAMPAIGN ’88 : Poll Assails Cleric Bids

A majority of Californians disapprove of the idea of clergymen entering politics, the latest California Poll says.
Moreover, the poll reported Wednesday that most Californians do not believe either Pat Robertson, who recently resigned his ministry, or the Rev. Jesse Jackson is highly qualified to be President or vice president. Robertson is seeking the GOP nomination and Jackson the Democratic.
Of the 759 California voters contacted by telephone, 63% said they did not believe that clergymen should become political candidates or publicly back candidates for public office.
Only 10% felt that Jackson was highly qualified to be President and only 3% thought Robertson was highly qualified.
The survey was conducted between Oct. 28 and Nov. 13. The California Poll claims a tolerance of 3.7% on a sample of 800 people, with 95% confidence.
