St. Bonaventure offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator Roger Sonsini has been dismissed from the school, allegedly for comments he made regarding running back Darrell Scott’s decision to sign with Colorado last week.
I called Sonsini and he declined to talk about his dismissal, only saying he was “completely devastated” with the decision. He said the decision was made by St. Bonaventure Principal Marc Groff, who referred all inquiries on the ‘personnel matter’ to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
Sonsini told the Dallas Morning News on Feb. 6 that “Colorado came in on Friday and said and did something and offered something that Darrell and his mom couldn’t pass up.”
The comment supposedly implied that Scott’s mother, Alexis Scott, profited in some way from her son’s decision to choose Colorado over Texas.
At the ESPN Zone on national signing day Feb. 6, she denied rumors of taking or being offered a bank job in the Boulder, Colo., area when questioned by reporters. Alexis Scott, who reportedly was angered by Sonsini’s comments, said she had never worked at a bank and that she currently worked as an office manager at a medical office in Ventura. She later met with St. Bonaventure administrators to discuss the issue and Sonsini’s dismissal seems to be the result of that meeting.
Sonsini, a retired Oxnard police officer, assisted Scott throughout the entire recruiting process and accompanied the highly regarded running back on official visits to Colorado and Texas. Yet, it seemed he had no idea which school he would choose in the end. Scott didn’t make his final decision until the Monday night before signing day.
