Two of the top scorers in the state faced each other in the first round of the Southern Section Division VI playoffs Friday afternoon at Balboa Park and, as you might expect, each played a role in the game’s outcome.
New Community Jewish senior Jesse Fishman, sixth in regular-season scoring in California, scored one goal and assisted on the other in the Jaguars’ 2-1 triumph over neighborhood rival Montclair Prep. Fishman has 33 goals and 10 assists in 14 games and he’s not done yet.
State scoring leader Austin Mandel got an unassisted tally for Montclair Prep, ending his season with 39 goals and 100 points. The Mounties’ senior finished with 121 career goals, third-most in state history, according to CalHi Sports.
Ryan Snyder also scored and goalie Garrett Pemstein made six saves for New Community Jewish. The Jaguars, second in the Harbor League behind defending section champion Animo, notched their first playoff victory ever Wednesday in the wild-card round and will try to deal Bishop its first loss next Tuesday.
