The Westchester boys’ basketball coaching staff can try and convince me all it wants that Fairfax was not in their team’s collective heads.
But I’m positive that five-game losing streak to Fairfax was weighing on the Comets -- until it ended Wednesday with Westchester’s 71-70 double-overtime victory at Loyola Marymount.
I mean, looking at the Westchester faces as a foul was called on guard Kareem Jamar that sent Lions guard Lance Bailey to the line for two free throws with two-tenths of a second left and a chance to snatch the win away?
Let’s just say that, after Bailey missed both free throws, the Comets’ hearts were back in their chests instead of in their throats.
As far as the big picture, expect Fairfax and Westchester to get the second- and third-seeded spots behind Taft when the boys’ basketball City Championship bracket is set on Saturday. That would put both teams on a collision course to meet again in the semifinals.
The pressure becomes almost unbearable just thinking about it.
