Girls’ basketball: Big surprise, Mater Dei plays good defense

Coach Kevin Kiernan and defense go together like stripes and zebras.

Trailing, 32-29, Mater Dei went to its full-court press and reeled off an 11-0 run to regain control of its Nike Extravaganza game against visiting Mira Costa. Doing most of the damage were two freshmen, Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis and Alexyz Vaioletama.

After three quarters, No. 17 Mater Dei, which has seven three-pointers, holds a 40-34 lead over No. 7 Mira Costa.
