Re “Using rail more, cars less,” Dec. 16
The Times reports that people living within half a mile of a station on the new Expo Line are using their cars less.
I am dumbstruck that in many of the articles I read about public transportation, the common practice on the East Coast of parking your car at the station and taking the train isn’t mentioned.
Many more would opt for the train if there were enough parking at the stations. It is time to demand that parking structures be built so we can park and ride and get our cars off the freeways.
Buses in some areas to get to the stations do not run often enough outside normal working hours or are too unreliable. Many more people could ride the train outside that walkable half a mile if there was parking available (even with a small fee).
